I went home to visit my mom recently. She's a really outstanding lady. We haven't always gotten along, but in the last 6 years since I've moved, things have gotten so much better. We are really close now, and I'm grateful every day for her. I'm not sure if moving away had anything to do with us becoming closer, but one thing is clear: we communicate a heck of a lot better than we used to.
I think we've both made strides in this area. Each time we tackle a new obstacle in our communication style it feels like a little victory. We're closer now than we've ever been.
Anyway, on this last visit my mom had a broken foot, so we spent a great deal of time relaxing. A week before my visit, on a whim, I added The Secret
and You Can Heal Your Life
to my Netflix queue, neither of which I'd seen before. I was aware of the book The Secret
's existence, but had not read it. I brought both DVD's with me, unwatched, to my mom's house. During the week we decided to watch them.
An incredible thing happened! We couldn't turn them off. More or less it was all information I had heard before, but for some reason, in this context, in this happy and relaxed atmosphere, it just clicked. We watched those two DVD's over and over again over the course of my week-long visit.
We were even inspired to make dream boards! If you are familiar at all with the law of attraction, you've probably made one. Maybe you've even made one on accident. Basically a dream board is a cork-board or poster-board with all your dreams and aspirations on it. Pictures of things you want to have in your life, both material and non. I'll post my picture below of my unfinished dream board to give you an idea:

Excuse the quality of the picture, it's from my iPhone. I suppose it's time to add a digital camera to that board, huh?
So a few of the things you might notice from my board is a beautiful ring set by Tacori, along with a few pictures of happy couples. Yes, I want those rings, but more importantly I want my boyfriend of almost 3 years to ask me to marry him. There's also a lot of fresh foods and greenery, which is really important to me. You might also see a grad cap and a "4.0", representative of my intention to graduate while maintaining my perfect GPA. A mint-green Stella scooter is on there, as well as an electric smartcar... I've lived without a car for over 6 years in anticipation of an all-electric car, and can not wait, I'm so excited! As an esthetician health skin is important to me, so you'll notice that's an idea spread throughout the board. A Nintendo Wii
to satisfy the child inside.
Anyway, you get the idea.
It's a work in progress. As soon as I started focussing on all the good things in life that I already had, I started noticing all these little things I had asked the universe for over the last few years that I had received, and this overwhelming sense of peace filled my body. It works! I had a whole week of myself awakening to the existence of all the small miracles that had taken place. Then as a culmination of all this, I was walking to the bus stop, listening to The Secret
(yes I now own the book, the audiobook, and the movie...) when the chapter about "perfect partners" came on. I suddenly had this memory flash of almost a year before I met my boyfriend... I was living with my friend Anna, a girl simultaneously wise beyond her years and winningly naive (don't ask me how she does that, but it's charming). I was upset over the loss of my last relationship, however awful and pointless it was. One night Anna said, "Enough of this moping! Come over here and we'll fix this."
We both sat at our kitchen table with blank sheets of construction paper in front of us. We grabbed markers and wrote "perfect partner" in the center of the page and circled it. Then, like little fingers crawling out across the page, we drew lines to smaller circles around the page, each containing a descriptive word: honest, giving, helpful, smart, talented... The list went on with even more person, descriptive phrases: "loves watching movies and snuggling," "has his own hobbies," "cares about organic and sustainable farming," etc. Whatever we wanted to use to describe what our perfect mate would be like. When we were done, she gave me a phrase to read out. It was something like "This is what I want for myself. I ask this of the universe, as long as it doesn't harm myself or others." It was more elaborate than that, but that's the gist of it. I'll have to ask her what it was next time I see her.
Anyway, so I'm walking to the bus stop and this memory comes flooding back. The realization almost brings me to tears: I asked the universe for Josh almost a year before we met, and he's perfect in every way.
This was -IS- such a huge thing to comprehend! I do know that I deserve happiness, and I know that I have received the greatest gift, a life of love. I am so happy and grateful now that I've found my soul mate. I'm so happy and grateful now that I have a wonderful relationship with my mom.
